About the influence of CAPACITAR approach on relations of the beneficiaries with society, the evaluation indicated that the application of CAPACITAR techniques contributed to psychosocial balance; which in turn, contributes to the reduction of the level of distrust, indifference, nervousness, and verbal aggression towards their environment both within the family and outside it. In addition, the practice of this approach provided an opportunity to interact with some members of close families, co- workers, and neighbors etc. who were interested in the approach.

Impact in activities

CAPACITAR-Rwanda is considering Rwandan society as “a society free from any form of trauma and stress where each member lives in harmony with him/herself, with others and actively participates in activities to its full development." The mission of CAPACITAR-Rwanda advocates values such as respect for life, empathy, acceptance, dedication and solidarity, with a mission to 'heal the trauma and heal our society '.

The assessment was done mainly on the beneficiaries (members of organizations/associations partners of the program CAPACITAR) living in 2 Districts where the programme was conducted. Eligible recipients were those aged at least 18 years and above. In addition, the study was interested in parents (family members), co-workers and neighbors as well as multipliers of CAPACITAR approach.

Overall, before the adoption of CAPACITAR approach, relations of the beneficiaries with other member of the society were affected by trauma and stress. Nearly, 20% of respondents believe that relations with children, other family members, neighbors were highly affected. Furthermore, the survey indicated that trauma and stress had reduced the ability of respondents to undertake income-generating activities [(Activites Generatrices de Revenue) (AGR)}, attendance at these AGRs, and participation in community life. This observation is confirmed by the group discussions which revealed that some people had behaviors of distrust, indifference, fear verbal aggression, etc. to the society following trauma and or stress.

The project impacted positively on the beneficiaries’ life conditions. The respondents confirmed that they used to suffer severely from mental health problems such as trauma but after the training, counselling, adapting and practicing CAPACITAR techniques they noticed remarkable improvement. They even managed to forgive those who killed their families. Apart from psychological problems, they had mentioned, social related problems that impeded their relationships with their neighbors and the whole social environment have been significantly decreased. They could neither entertain nor interact with them. But now, they feel safe and happy to communicate with them and to be involved in the same income generating activities.

The majority of respondents (80%) practice CAPACITAR techniques in the morning. This means at home for the majority or work for others, before starting their daily activities. Some focus group participants indicated that they made these techniques a daily routine in the morning before starting the day. They also noted that the practice can continue during the day or evening, midday or any other time when necessary. Others point out that the morning practice is more preferable as it provides an opportunity for some family members (spouses, children, etc.) to practice together before going to work. They believe that this moment is an auspicious occasion of calming down emotionally and physiologically and helps them to go about their business and interact with others better without much trouble.
